Why first projects go wrong

Most plans are written for people
who already know how.

We read hundreds of reviews of best-selling woodworking plans. The same four problems kept showing up. This book fixes every one of them.

When printing the plans some of the instructions are on different pages than the photos.
1
Photo and words, always together.Every step is one block: the picture and the instruction sit side by side, never split across two pages.
Plans require a brad nailer and a pocket hole jig, neither of which I have.
2
Tools listed before you buy wood. Each plan opens with tool icons. If it needs anything beyond the basic four, it says so in yellow, right at the top.
When you account for the saw kerf you can not get 3" and 2.5" out of 5.5".
3
Cut lists that actually add up.Every cut list counts the width of the saw blade and shows how to get each piece out of each picket, so nothing comes up short.
I had a little trouble cutting pieces that have angle cuts on both ends.
4
Angle cuts, drawn out.A whole chapter on 15°, 22.5° and 45° cuts, with drawings of where to measure and which way the blade tilts.

Quotes are real buyer comments about other plans on Etsy, shown to explain the problem.

Buy it or build it?

The book pays for itself with your first build.

Cedar outdoor furniture is expensive in stores. The same pieces built from fence pickets cost a fraction, and they're yours.

Store prices are typical US retail for a similar cedar piece; wood cost assumes pickets at about $3.50. Your prices will vary.

Part 1 · Workshop Basics

Never built anything? Start on page one.

Before the first plan there's a 30-page chapter that teaches everything the plans assume you know.

  • Which pickets to pick at the store (and which to leave on the pile)
  • Cedar vs. treated pine, and why real sizes are smaller than the label
  • How to read a cut list and why the saw blade "eats" 1/8"
  • 15°, 22.5° and 45° angle cuts, drawn step by step
  • Screws, glue and finishes that survive rain and sun
  • Safety basics before you plug anything in

Questions

Before you order.

I've never built anything. Is this really for me?

Yes. Start with the Workshop Basics chapter, then any level-1 project (there are dozens). They use straight cuts, a few screws and take an afternoon. Every plan tells you the level before you buy any wood.

What tools do I need?

A circular or miter saw, a drill/driver, a tape measure and a speed square cover most of the book. A few indoor pieces use a pocket hole jig, and a brad nailer helps but is never required. Each plan shows its tools on the first page.

What are fence pickets and where do I buy them?

They're the boards used for wooden fences: about 5/8" thick, 5.5" wide and 6' long. Home Depot, Lowe's and most lumber yards sell cedar pickets for around $3–4 each. The book shows how to pick straight ones.

Are the measurements in inches or centimeters?

Plans are in inches and feet, the way US lumber is sold. If you work in metric, the Shop Wall Charts include a full inch-to-centimeter conversion table.

How fast does the printed book arrive?

It's printed and shipped in 5–8 business days within the US, with free shipping and a tracking number by email. If you choose Printed + Digital, the PDF arrives right away so you can start today.

Can I give it as a gift?

Yes. You can ship the book straight to them, and every order includes a printable gift certificate. Order the printed book by December 10 for Christmas delivery in the US.

I don't have a printer. Is the digital edition still useful?

Yes, it works on a phone or tablet in the garage. But if you prefer paper, choose the printed book: it lies flat and stays open on your page.

Can I sell what I build?

Yes. Every edition includes a commercial builder license: sell the planters, benches and tables you make at markets, fairs or online. What you can't do is share or resell the plans themselves.

What is the Build Buddy app?

It's the book turned into a step-by-step guide on your phone: one step per screen, a cut planner, a shopping list you can tick off at the store, and a resize tool that recalculates the cuts when you change a size. It comes with the eBook + App and Complete Workshop editions.

Do I need the app?

No. The book has everything you need to build all 100 projects. The app makes it faster: you don't have to flip pages, and it does the math when you change a size.

Is the app a subscription?

No. You pay once and keep it. It works on iPhone and Android, and you'll get the login details by email right after checkout.

Will I find these plans for free on the internet?

You'll find ideas and videos. What you won't find is 100 plans in one layout, with cut lists that add up, tools flagged up front and the photo next to every step, in a book you can keep on the bench.

Can I change the sizes?

Yes. Many plans have a "Make it yours" box with longer, shorter or taller versions, and the cut lists show which pieces change.

What if I don't like it?

Email us within 30 days of your order and we'll refund you in full. You don't have to send the book back.

How do I download the digital edition?

Right after checkout you get an email with your download link. If it doesn't show up, check the spam folder or write to us and we'll send it again.
